Course description

Objectives and Content

Objectives:

The student will gain practical experience with research as a process and work method. The student will plan, execute, communicate a cooperative research project, and give feedback on their own and others work. The student will develop an improved understanding of the research process and the contribution of research in society.

Contents:

The student will carry out a small research project in collaboration with a fellow student. The project will be carried out in a research group under supervision, and the topic is decided in agreement with the course leader. A project report (group work) shall be written. The topic and results will be communicated on a poster at a poster session (group work). The work will receive feedback from fellow students (peer review) and the supervisor. The students participate in joint sessions to develop their scientific knowledge and skills.

On completion of the course the student should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge

The student

  • has knowledge about research ethical norms, guidelines, and best practice in the research field
  • can thoroughly delve into a new physics problem and relevant working methods.
  • can explain the principles behind and the purpose of the research activities that are included in the project
  • can place their own data and findings in a professional context

Skills

The student

  • can plan, implement, and report results from a defined research task according to the standards of the subject
  • can find, summarize, and use specialist knowledge of relevance for the project
  • can explain and justify how the results in the project assignment can be interpreted and evaluated.
  • can assess their own results against new professional knowledge within the field and give feedback to the work of fellow students

General competence

The student

  • develops professional identity, understanding of roles, and understanding of the specificity of research and the contribution of research in society
  • can work with others in a research community and maintain progress of a defined project
  • can communicate own work and results through academic reports and professional posters
  • can use knowledge in physics for critical thinking, responsible reflection, and professional feedback

Access to the course requires admission to a programme of study at The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences
Teaching and learning methods
Seminars on topics, challenges, and concerns related to project work. Midterm meeting where students present the status of their own projects.Writing of a project report in scientific format together with a fellow student. Poster presentation of the project work. Oral and written feedback from fellow students and supervisors.
Compulsory Assignments and Attendance
Mandatory attendance at seminars and course meetings
Forms of Assessment

Approved portfolio in written format that contains the following:

  • A project description
  • A project report in scientific format
  • Two written feedbacks to other reports
  • One poster that conveys your own results
  • Feedback and assessment of other students¿ posters and presentations

All elements must be approved to pass the course.
