Extend your study period

Exchange students/short term students admitted to the University of Bergen for one semester, can apply to extend their study period with one additonal semester.

Only students admitted to UIB in the autumn semester can apply for extension to the following next semester (spring). It will no longer be possible to apply for extensions from spring to autumn semester.

The maximum period of admission for exchange students/short term students is limited to maximum one academic year (two semester). This applies regardless of your student status and whether there were two non-contiguous periods.

Deadline for the Spring semester 2025 is 15 October*.

* No extension will be given beyond this deadline. 

Conditions: 

  • Be an exchange student in the following categories: Bilateral, EEA/Norway grants, Erasmus+, Nordplus.
  • The extension must be included in the total number of nominated students. This is specially important for admission to restricted courses.*
  • Official confirmation of extension issued by home university is required. Must be signed by your university's Erasmus coordinator. 

Academic requirements

  • Have a satisfactory study progress equal to a full semester workload of 30 credits (Norwegian language courses will not be included).
  • Competence development within the student's educational background and field of study should be the main purpose for extension
  • Students applying for extention are expected to take courses equal to a full semester workload/30 ECTS.
  • Application for extension to take Norwegian courses or part-time semester workload will not be processed.
  • Extensions are subjected to courses availability and overall study progress. 

*Please note that if the number of nominations exceed the number of students/places agreed between our institutions,  we will request the student’s home institution to prioritize their students. If priority is given to new students, application for extension will be denied.
We do not accept Free-movers.

NON-EU/EEA students must document financing and apply for study progress report, if extension of student status is granted.

Application deadlines:

Extensions are possible only from the autumn semester directly to the following spring semester

  • Spring semester: 15 October*

Starting from the spring semester 2025, it will no longer be possible to apply for extensions from spring to autumn semester.

Please note that the University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS) has a different deadline.

Period for application:

You can apply for an extension during this period:

  • Spring semester: 15 September to 15 October.

Documentation must be uploaded with the deadline.

Students will be informed by 10 December of the outcome of their application.

Applications for extension cannot be processed earlier and are subjected to availability and study progress. Please observe the deadlines! 

How to apply/documentation requirements:

  1. Find courses (max. 4) you plan to take in the course list for exchange student*
  2. Official confimation of extension issued and signed by the erasmus coordinator at home institution. 
  3. Extension must be included in the total number of nominated students. This is specially important for admission to restricted courses at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.
  4. Apply online for the extension within the deadline and upload the official confirmation of extension.

Application for extension to take Norwegian courses, will not be processed. Norwegian courses are given in addition to degree courses and cannot form the basis of the student stay at UIB. These courses are given on a first-come first-served policy and therefore, we cannot guarantee admission.

Please note that applications without the official confirmation of extension from home university will not be processed!

Applications for extension will not be processed before the exams result for the current semester are available.
