Nordic citizens
- Nordic citizens do not need a study permit to study in Norway.
- Nordic citizens should register with the Norwegian Tax Administration office if staying in Norway for more than 6 months.
EU/EEA citizens
- EU/EEA citizens do not need to apply for a residence permit.
- EU/EEA citizens must register with the police if staying in Norway for more than 6 months.
Non-EU/EEA citizens
Non-EU students should apply for and be granted a study permit before traveling to Norway. Processing time may take several weeks.
Applications submitted by the 1 July will be processed in time for the semester start in August.
Required documentation:
- Letter of Acceptance: Letter which confirms full-time admission etc. Sent by email or uploaded on SĂžknadsweb.
- Documentation of adequate and secure housing: A copy of the tenancy agreement must included in your application.
- Documentation of funds (2025/2026): You must document sufficient funds to cover living expenses when applying for a study permit:
- Students staying for the autumn semester 2025 only: NOK 75.845
- Students staying for two semesters (2025/2026) or longer: NOK 166 859 (per year).
- Students staying for the spring semester 2026 only: NOK 91.014

How to apply for study permit:
- Print UDI's checklist and gather the necessary documents
- Create an account on UDI's Application Portal and
- Submit your online application
- Pay the application fee (currently NOK 5400)
- Register the UiB's organization number: 874 789 542
- Book an appointment to hand in your documents in person at the nearest embassy or VFS centres.
- Always check the updated application procedures for your country at UDI's website.
Non-EU/EEA citizens with a Schengen residence permit
- Non-EU/EEA citizens with a Schengen residence permit MUST follow the application procedures for Non-EU/EEA citizens.
- Schengen permit is limited to a max. of 90 days stay in Norway. Registration with the police authorities is compulsory.
- *International students from countries outside the EU/EEA that have a Schengen residence permit can submit their application from Norway. This option should not be selected unless it is absolutely necessary. This is due to long processing times and limitations regarding travel, and other compulsory registration requirements while waiting for the residence permit. The 1 July guarantee does not apply for students submitting their application from Norway.
- Students without a visa and/or residence permit in Norway that fail to complete the compulsory registration within the deadline, risk being expelled from Norway and refused entry to the country for a period of time. For more information on the following page about expulsion on UDI.no.
Students staying in Norway for up to 90 days
Students staying in Norway for up to 90 days must check with the Norwegian authorities, if they need to apply for a student permit. Visitor visas are issued for up to 90 days and will not cover stays beyond this period.
