On Friday 11 October it was finally time for Johannes S. Førde's trial lecture and defense in Ulrikes Aula, Bergen.

In his dissertation, Johannes S. Førde analyzed how Norway and Sweden coordinate civil protection and emergency preparedness through directorates: Direktoratet for samfunnssikkerhet og beredskap (DSB) in Norway and the Myndigheten för samhällsskydd och beredskap (MSB) in Sweden. He examines how these directorates function as coordinating bodies and how national contexts influence their work. The dissertation concludes that "coordinating directorates" are useful for managing complex problems and that these bodies, with their many tasks and expertise, can become important hubs for future policy in civil protection and crisis management.

Professor Lise Rykkja from the Department of Government led the defense, with Professor Emeritus Werner Jann (University of Potsdam) as the first opponent and Professor Bengt Jacobsson (Södertörn University) as second opponent. The committee was chaired by Professor Anne Lise Fimreite (UiB).

His dissertation is available from this link.
