INTEGRATED 4D TECTONO-STRATIGRAPHIC EVOLUTION OF THE NORTHERN PELOPONNESE MARGIN AND THE GULF OF CORINTH, GREECE

Establishing the relationships between structural and sedimentary processes at the fault block scale in rift basins is essential for understanding of rift basin evolution and developing new exploration concepts in mature rifts such as the North Sea. The main objective of this project is to integrate field-generated structural and sedimentary data from the northern margin of the Pelopenesse with seismic data from the Gulf of Corinth in a fully 3D digital model that will allow for structural restoration of the rift structures and sedimentary modelling. This project will use spatial geological data that has been already generated in the field (i.e. mapped stratigraphic boundaries, tectonic structures and directional data), together with terrestrial-LIDAR datasets and satellite sourced digital elevation models, to build a fully 3D rift-scale tectono-stratigraphic framework.  Sedimentary modelling will be coupled to the structural restoration of the fault blocks at different stratigraphic stages for evaluating the evolution of the systems through time. The student will develop skills in GIS data management of both detailed and regional data, structural and sedimentary modelling and quantitative analysis of syn-rift successions, providing relevant training for employment in the oil and gas industry or for advanced sedimentological, geomorphological or basin analysis research. This project will work on data originated in ongoing research projects in UiB and will run in parallel to other master projects working on tectonics, sedimentation and geomorphology of the Corinth Rift. Fieldwork may also be required in order to ground-truth the results obtained from the digital modelling.
