Research
I am working on a collaborative, interdisciplinary project about the epiphytes of Laminaria - kelp seaweed. On the stipe of Laminaria we can find many different algae and animals (bryozoa and more) which are known to produce a variety of bioactive compounds; however, this biomass that reaches up to approximately 3.3 mil tons is discarded as waste during the harvesting process.
We implement a zero-waste approach of exploiting this epiphytic biomass trying to convert it into a variety of valuable bioactive products with promising applications in human health. We aim to the development of a sustainanble and "greener" seaweed industry.
