Paulsen has a M.A. in social anthropology from the University of Bergen, with research conducted on waste management practices and environmental engagements in Thailand. As of late, Paulsen researched how the Covid-19 pandemic afflicted seafarers' working conditions as part of the Norwegian Maritime Museum project 'Seafarers During the Pandemic'.

Currently he is a PhD candidate on the ASMOG project: "Automation Shift in the Maritime Sector of Oil and Gas Industry: Assessing Risk and Safety, Protecting Labor".
