Short info

I am a researcher in marine geomicrobiology with a main focus on deep sea sediments. However, I also use my expertise in other fields, such as shallow hydrothermal systems, mycology, museum collection preservation, agricultural microbiology, and mathematics.
Research

I am a researcher at the Center for Deep Sea Research, linked to the Department of Earth Science, where I have different responsabilities.

I work in the geomicrobiology group of Steffen Jørgensen at the Center for Deep Sea Research. My research is targeted at understanding the microbial communities inhabiting deep sea sediments. In these environments, the enormous amount of cells contrasts with the little amount of energy available for growth. The cells are expected to grow at a tremendously slow pace, making studies on community dynamics very difficult. By quantifying the different functional microbial groups throughout sediment cores we are trying to better understand how the change in chemistry can influence the microbial structures.

My research also expands to other fields. I have in the past years regularly been on the island of Milos (Greece) to study the shallow hydrothermal system. Through collaborations, I have also had the chance to use my bioinformatics and biostatistics competences in various fields such as animal rumen microbiology, museum collection microbiology, and mathematical ecology.

Since 2021, I am also managing the laboratory for geomicrobiology. In this role, I have successfully led Norway's first My Green Lab certification of a public laboratory.

A little bit more about me:

I come from Bretagne, on the western end of France (near Asterix and Obelix's village!). My origins have had a strong impact on my hobbies: I play bagpipe, freedive, and enjoy most of the activities associated with the sea. Not surprisingly, my education revolved around marine biology, but also environmental sciences, virology and microbiology. I got the chance to study in several countries, starting in Brest (France) where I did a IUT of Biology during 2 years. I then finished my Bachelor in Environmental biology in Edinburgh (Scotland). I continued with the Erasmus Mundus Master for Marine Biodiversity and Conservation (EMBC) in Bremen (Germany) and Oviedo (Spain). This also allowed me to do my master project at the Danish Archaea Center in København (Denmark). Finally, I moved to Norway to do my PhD at the University of Bergen.

Outreach

Posters and oral presentations at workshops and conferences the past 5 years: SmartLab24 2024 (Oslo), CanCell retreat 2024 (Sweden), CodaWork 2024 (Spain), IAMG 2023 (Trondheim), Microenergy workshop 2022 (Danemark), Gordon research Conference marine microbes 2022 (Switzerland).

Until recently, I have been responsible for science communication and outreach at the Centre for Deep Sea research through website, yearly cruise report, and yearly progress science reports. In addition, I have had leading roles in outreach and awareness events, such as Forskningsdagene, Passion for Ocean Day, and OPPLEV Marineholmen. My work has also been published in popular science supports, such as “The Conversation” (FR).
