Individual accommodation of the study program

Facilitation of the study program includes adapting the learning environment and teaching methods. This can typically involve extended deadlines for submissions and mandatory activities, designated study spaces, or rest or nursing rooms.

We will help you with individual accommodations.

Main content

The faculty that you are studying at is responsible for facilitating the study program. For practical reasons, we process applications for both exam accommodations, and applications for study program accommodations in different parts of the university administration. However, you apply for both types of accommodations using the same form.

Leave of ansence

One of the most frequently granted accommodations is a leave of absence from studies.

If you do not attend mandatory activities, this may have negative consequences for your study progression. If a disability or another special need is the reason that you cannot attend, it is important that you apply for a leave of absence so that this can be distinguished from regular absences.

Procedure

If you have a need that requires you to take a full or partial leave of absence from your studies, it is important that you contact the information center at your faculty. Together, you and the student advisor can find measures that best suit you and your situation.

Designated study spaces

If you wish to be seated in a room with fewer students, you can apply for a reserved spot permanently. We also have study spaces with adjustable desks. Designated study spaces can also be a useful measure for those who need special equipment and aids, increased predictability, or for those with concentration problems or anxiety.

Please note that we have a limited number of study spaces. Only some faculties have designated study spaces. Allocated spaces are valid for one academic year at a time, from approximately September 15 to June 15.

Rest and nursing rooms

All faculties have rest and nursing rooms. In many places, you need to get access through your student card to use these rooms. You must apply for this.

Dyslexia

If you have documented dyslexia and need Lingdys for Windows or Lingpilot for Mac, you can fill out a form on NAV’s website.

Assessment

Do you suspect that you might have reading and writing difficulties? Students who lack documentation or who have not been assessed for reading and writing difficulties before and who now wish to be assessed can contact the Study Department by email at tilrettelegging@uib.no.

You will then be referred to a free assessment. If you have an outdated assessment, for example done at the primary school level, we generally want to refer you for a new assessment.

Public services outside UiB

There are several public services that can help make your everyday life easier.

  • Sammen offers student counseling, housing, health services, and relevant courses. They also have several apartments and dormitories for students with disabilities. You can get help with parking and transportation.
  • Tibi lends out adapted literature. They produce literature in alternative formats for blind and visually impaired students. You apply for access to Tibi yourself.
  • NAV has several relevant services, such as the assistive technology center and supported studies.

Mentor from NAV

This is an offer for students who receive educational support through NAV, and need to contact your caseworker at NAV if you want this offer.

Having a mentor involves receiving study support from a fellow student. A mentor will be individually tailored to your needs, but can, for example, be a supporter who can assist with study techniques and structuring your study routine, and who can help with academic discussions and exam preparations.

Personal study assistant

The University of Bergen offers a personal study assistant to students with various accommodation needs who do not qualify for educational support from NAV. This is because the legal threshold for receiving help from NAV in this way is very high. The study assistants will be regular contact person who can assist with structuring and organizing study work and be a conversation partner. Personal study assistants will not be able to discuss academic and material issues. If you think this is something for you, you can contact your study advisor.

Assistive devices

If you have a long-term need for assistive devices (over 2 years), you can contact NAV Assistive Technology Center. If you have a temporary need, the university may have equipment you can borrow.

Hearing loops and IR systems can make it easier to follow lectures if you have hearing problems. Some auditoriums and group rooms also have IR systems. You can borrow “necklaces” from the AV service, and you can borrow them for one semester at a time. You must report if there is a fault with the “necklace” or the sound system.
