Objectives and content
Objectives:
The programme aims to give students a broad interdisciplinary education in basic geology and geological processes, geomatics and spatial handling of remote sensing data, as well as programmimg and AI.
The programme combines the use of Earth science, modern technology, data analysis and artificial intelligence to contribute to sustainable management of natural resources, and map the risk of natural hazards such as avalanches and flooding.
The programme is suitable for those who are interested in our planet, and how we use and change the natural world around us.
Content:
The first three semesters focus on different basic courses in geology, geomatics, mathematics and programming. This gives a basis for more specialized courses in acquisition and spatial analysis of remote sensing data, geomatics and the use of artificial intelligence in the three last semesters.
Required Learning Outcomes
On completion of the programme the candidate should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:
Knowledge
The candidate
- has good knowledge about the basic principles, terms and methods within geology
- has good knowledge about geomatic theory, tools and methods, as well as processing and analysis of remote sensing data
- has a good overview of how geology is important for resource management, natural hazards and energy
- is familiar with how GIS, geomatics and remote sensing data are useful for society, public administration and industry
- has good knowledge about how programming, data science and machine learning can be used in different societal contexts
Skills
The candidate
- has training in combining the fields of geology, geomatics and informatics towards solving various problems
- can apply an understanding of geological processes to define and solve problems within Earth science
- can use GIS-related tools to handle, analyze and visualize geospatial data and remote sensing data
- is familiar with computer programming and the principles for using programming languages
- can use programming tools and machine learning algorithms to analyze and visualize GIS-data, towards solving Erath science related questions
- can present subject matter and results of investigations in oral and written form
General competence
The candidate
- can find, assess and reference information and subject matter, and present this in such a way that it sheds light on a problem
- can work both independently and as part of a group
- can communicate orally and in writing with both experts and non-experts about subject matter in geology, geomatics and informatics
- can reflect and apply critical thinking, and adjust one¿s own work under tuition
