Ole Hjortland forsker på logikk og rasjonalitet. Hva gjør et argument til et godt argument? Hva vil det si å tenke og handle rasjonelt? Finnes det universelle normer for god argumentasjon? Hjortland leder i 2016-2021 et prosjekt om logikkens filosofi finansiert av Norges Forskningsråd. Han er medlem av Munich Center for Mathematical Philosophy (LMU Munich) og underredaktør for logikk i tidsskriftet Ergo.
Hjortland leder forskergruppen i logikk ved Institutt for filosofi og førstesemesterstudier.
