Air Pollution Linked to Sick Leave Even 2 Decades Later
Ane Johannessen, a researcher at CIH, has been awarded the ERS Best Abstract Grant for Health Lungs for Life.

The 2000 euro prize was awarded at the European Respiratory Society (ERS) 28th Congress held in Paris 15-19 September 2018. It is the largest international congress in respiratory medicine with over 23 000 delegates attending.
The Health Lungs for Life award’s mission is to enable everyone to “breather clean air”. They believe that political action is necessary to tackle air pollution and that robust research will provide critical evidence to support this.
City planning - the societal impacts of air pollution
Johannessen’s research adds to the evidence base on the societal impacts of breathing in polluted air, and its long-term impacts on health.
Her results show that even low air pollution exposure has such visible effects over the long term. Johannessen suggests that perhaps current recommended limits are actually too high. The data might be helpful, from a public health perspective, in terms of future city planning.
