Two full-time 4-year PhD Fellow positions are open at BCEPS—Apply by 15 February 2024

BCEPS is thrilled to announce two full-time 4-year PhD Fellow positions.

This is a great opportunity to join the dynamic and international research team at BCEPS, a Norges Forskningsråd (Research Council of Norway) Centre of Excellence at the University of Bergen.

In both positions, the PhD Fellow will complete a PhD in the form of three publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

The specific requirements and focus areas of each position differ, as outlined below and explained in greater detail on the application page for each position.

PhD Position 1

Key requirements:

• The applicant must hold a master's degree or equivalent in medicine, philosophy, ethics, political science, or economics.
• We are especially interested in people whose area of interest include political philosophy and democratic theory.

Focus area:

• This position focuses on the topic of ethics and priority setting in health.
• The candidate will work for the Rationing Lab at BCEPS, led by professors Zeke Emanuel (University of Pennsylvania) and Ole F. Norheim (University of Bergen).
• The Rationing Lab aims to develop a general ethical framework for priority setting that integrates utilitarian, egalitarian, and prioritarian principles. In addition, the Lab will elaborate a new procedural approach for implementing models of priority setting.
• The PhD candidate will help the Lab achieve these goals, and a PhD protocol will be developed in collaboration with the Lab leads.

PhD Position 2

Key requirements:

• The applicant must hold a master's degree or equivalent in medicine, economics, or epidemiology.
• Experience from relevant research projects or relevant policy processes will be considered an advantage.

Focus area:

• This position focuses on the topic of Disease Control Priorities (DCP) in low- and middle-income countries. The candidate will work in the DCP4 team led by professors David Watkins (University of Washington) and Ole F. Norheim (University of Bergen).
• DCP4 aims to apply new economic evaluation methods to generate new evidence and recommendations for essential health services that satisfy both fairness and efficiency considerations. The work in DCP4 is organised around three key activities: systematic reviews, data collection, and generation of DCP4 league tables.
• The PhD candidate will help DCP4 achieve these goals, and a PhD protocol will be developed in collaboration with the DCP4 leads.
