Norwegian Bank Account

International students staying in Norway for longer than six months can open a bank account when they have received their Norwegian ID number.

Staying for 2 semesters or more (more than 6 months)

You must have a Norwegian ID number to open a bank account. When you have received the ID number, you must meet in person at the bank of your choice.

You must bring the following documents to the bank:

  • Passport
  • Residence registration certificate (EU/ EEA/EFTA citizens) or residence card (non-EU/EEA/EFTA citizens)
  • Letter of Acceptance
  • Documentation of your Norwegian ID number

You should expect several weeks for the account to be opened.

Staying for 1 semester (less than 6 months)

Unfortunately it is nearly impossible for those who are in Norway for six months or less (one semester) to open a Norwegian bank account. We therefore recommend that you bring with you a credit card (visa/master) that can be used in Norway during your stay.

Norwegian ID number

The Norwegian ID number is an 11 digit personal identifier, issued by the Tax Administration office (Skatteetaten). The number will be issued to foreign nationals with a residence permit in Norway.
