Engelsk (master)

English is probably the most important language in the world today. With a master's degree in English, you will improve your knowledge of English-language linguistics, literature and culture, while carrying out independent research in the form of a master's thesis.

What will you learn?

A master's degree in English gives you the ability to critically evaluate theories within linguistics and literary studies and more general findings in empirical studies, as well as to work independently and collaborate with others.

You can choose to specialize in linguistics, where you can explore topics such as language variation and change, language history, language acquisition, etc. You learn about theory and method in linguistics and learn how you can collect and analyse your own data.

Alternatively, you can specialize in English-language literature and culture, both historically and in the present. You explore literary genres and how English literature has developed up to the present day. You learn about theory and method within literary studies - how you can analyse them in the light of literary history and literary form, and create your own interpretations.

Student life

a master's student in English, you work side by side with other master's students, within nine different language subjects. In the reading rooms, you become part of a pleasant environment where students and staff come from all over the world. Contact between students and staff is informal, and the atmosphere is good. Because the program has few students, the environment is very good. You will use the second year of the program to write your master's thesis. You get individual guidance throughout the entire research and writing process.

As a student with us, you will have most of your lessons at Nygårdshøyden in central Bergen. You have access to the reading room, library, colloquium room, fitness centre, canteen, cafe and student bar on campus. At UiB you will also find many different student organisations that will give you many experiences and friends for life.
