Main content
What do you learn?
Norway has many interests in Latin America through investments, human rights work and work for democratisation processes. In the programme, we discuss important questions such as:
-
How can historical processes explain today’s complex Latin America?
-
In what way is the diversity of groups of people on the continent reflected in language, culture and society?
-
What is the status of the Spanish language in the world today?
You gain knowledge of the Spanish language and of Latin American literature and history. You will develop analytical and methodological skills in these three disciplines.
In the programme, you first take a subject that gives you a theoretical and methodological basis to be able to conduct independent research within Latin American studies.
The Master’s thesis is an independent research project on a topic of your choice within Spanish linguistics, Latin American literature or Latin American history. It is also possible to write a Master’s thesis on subject didactics. You write your Master’s thesis in Spanish, and it may be relevant to travel on fieldwork to collect data.
Student life
As a Master’s student at the Department of Foreign Languages, you will be welcomed into an international and vibrant environment. You can apply for your own space in the reading room together with the other Master’s students at the institute. Teaching takes place as lectures, seminars, group work and individual guidance. The Master’s students attend an all-day conference at the end of the second semester. After this, work on the Master’s thesis begins.
As a student with us, you will have most of your teaching at Nygårdshøyden in the heart of Bergen city centre. You have access to the reading room, library, colloquium room, fitness centre, canteen, café and student bar on campus. At UiB you will also find many different student organisations. Being part of a student organisation is a valuable investment in your time as a student and it gives you many experiences and friends for life.
