FRAGILE FUTURES IN THE SAHEL REGION: State-citizen relations in a context of multiple crises

Helle Samuelsen will give a brief talk on state-citizen relationships in the Sahel region taking point of departure in her recently published monograph FRAGILE FUTURES: Ambiguities of Care in Burkina Faso. In the first part of the talk, she will focus on the state-citizen relationship from a citizen’s perspective arguing that even though the health infrastructure in Burkina Faso is weak and many citizens feel neglected by the state, the state continues to play an important role in people’s engagements and hopes for a better future. In the second part of the talk, she presents her newly DANIDA funded project where the aim is to examine the state-citizen relationships from within the state through a focus on how civil servants in key ministries understand their roles as bureaucrats and as citizens and how they navigate during multiple crises.

Helle Samuelsen is an associate professor at the Department of Anthropology, University of Copenhagen and serves as an External member of the Faculty Board at our Faculty.

The talk will be given in English and there will be an opportunity for discussion at the end.
