Speakers
A highlight of the first symposium this spring is an inspirational lecture by Professor Ola Myklebust. He is the head of the Norwegian Cancer Genomics Consortium and NorSarC, and has recently relocated his main affiliation from Oslo University Hospital - Radiumhospitalet, and the University of Oslo to the University of Bergen. Although rare cancers combined make up one of the largest patient groups with the by far most lost life-years, therapeutic research is difficult and neglected by industry due to low commercial potential. With some exceptions, the treatments have not improved significantly the last decades, and thus new strategies are required to improve outcome for this patient group.. In his talk, Myklebust will highlight how novel research efforts may improve the available treatment options for 'orphan cancers'.
Following the Inspirational lecture, Caroline Engen, CCBIO PhD candidate from the Gjertsen group will give a lecture on how the concept of personalised medicine contributes the transformation of health-services and the society as we know it. We hope her talk combined with the Inspirational lecture will inspire a fruitful discussion amongst the participants of the symposium concerning the opportunities, challenges, and the moral questions raised in relation to the concept of personalised medicine. You may read about a recent presentation by Caroline Engen here.
We are also happy to announce that Hege Avsnes Dale and Endy Spriet from the Molecular Imaging Center (MIC) will share with us their knowledge and experience with high resolution imaging, recently available in Bergen through the MIC platform.
Oncologist and PhD candidate Hanna Dillekås will present her project 'Recurrence of breast cancer in relation to delayed reconstruction', that also recently received attention in the press.
PhD candidate Sigmund Ytre-Hauge with background in radiology will share his exiting project on MRI texture analysis in endometrial cancer.
