Drug policy at UiB

The drug and addiction prevention work at UiB is to be integrated into the systematic HSE work. UiBs drug policy describes the University of Bergen's stance on the use of alcohol, illegal drugs and gambling addiction.

Alcohol and illegal drugs


During working hours and at the workplace:

  • At UiB there is zero tolerance for work while under the influence of drugs. Especially in hazardous work environments, this can be a major safety risk.
  • The zero tolerance rule applies to alcohol and illegal drugs. For employees that uses medicines that can affect the working ability, manager must be contacted  

In social occasions related to work such as travel, representation and social gatherings:

  • The university wants to contribute to an inclusive and caring culture.
  • Social events must be inclusive and safe for everyone. When alcohol is served, there must always be non-alcoholic alternatives.
  • When traveling, participating in courses and conferences and other work-related occasions, employees are expected to show moderation and a behavior that does not harm the university's reputation. Employees are to be regarded as representatives of UiB in such contexts.

Gambling and computer games

  • Digital gaming activities is not allowed during workhours.
  • The use of gambling and computer games at other times of the day shall not affect the performance of work tasks.

Follow-up and support

  • In the event of concern or suspicion, the manager is responsible for follow-up. Read more in Retningslinjer for håndtering av avhengighet ved UiB (AKAN-retningslinjer (no)
  • All employees are responsible for the working environment. If you have concerns about a colleague, talk to your manager or safety representative.
  • Employees that have developed an addiction to drugs or gambling, can  contact the Occupational Health Service (BHT) for help and guidance. BHT follow  the Akan* model for handling individual cases. Read more on the Akan websites (no)

* The Akan system is authorized in an agreement concluded between the parties in Norwegian working life (LO, NHO and the State).
