The research group's seminar on February 22nd centered on 'The Legal Matrix of Ship Recycling.' Lawyer and former UiB student, Ingvild Kristine Hoel, was invited to discuss the latest developments in sustainable ship decommissioning. Hoel's expertise stems from her master's thesis, supervised by Professor emeritus Ernst Nordtveit, and later published in the European Transport Law, issue no. 3, 2021. Currently working as a legal specialist in the maritime sector, Hoel is actively engaged in the intersection of shipping and technology.

During her presentation, Hoel delved into the intricate legal framework surrounding ship recycling, highlighting recent EU legislation and other international regulations. She drew attention to hazardous waste management practices, particularly in countries like Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan, where a significant portion of global ship dismantling occurs. Hoel further discussed international initiatives aimed at addressing industry challenges and focusing on the different modifications of the EU Shipping Recycling Regulation 1257/2013 prompted by the Hong Kong Convention.

The seminar is part of the WickedWaters seminar series and receives funding from the Research Council of Norway under project 341973.
