Nadia Skoglund Taki is a new Ph.D. student at the Department of Mathematics. We met her to get to know her better and find out more about her Ph.D. project.

Thank you for the warm welcome. I am very happy to join the team.
Since most of us don’t know you well, can you tell us a bit about your background?
My background is in both mathematics and physics. I started studying applied physics and mathematics at The Arctic University of Norway before taking a master's degree in applied mathematics at the University of Bergen. The title of my master's thesis is "Simulation of Flow and Mechanics in the Brain", where my supervisors were Florin A. Radu, Kundan Kumar, and Ingeborg G. Gjerde. The aim of the thesis is given in the title, where we used numerical and analytical tools. It was both very educational and a fun experience, but there were also some crazy long nights to finish it. After surviving my thesis, I took courses relevant for analysis in partial differential equations.
Why did you choose to pursue a PhD?
I wanted to continue learning mathematics and be able to work in research within partial differential equations. Taking more courses only left me more motivated to continue down this road, so here I am.
Your PhD project is part of the Center for Modelling of Coupled Subsurface Dynamics. Can you tell us a little bit about your project?
We wish to develop a model describing rupture dynamics including advanced friction laws in the presence of fluids. The aim will be to look at the numerical analysis of this model. There will for sure be a lot of functional analysis from what I have seen so far, which suits me well. My supervisors are Kundan Kumar, Jan Martin Nordbotten, and Inga Berre. If I am lucky, some of their knowledge will rub off on me.
