Workshop

CoDA workshop at CDeepSea

The Center for Deep sea will host a workshop on compositional data analysis with Vera Pawlowsky-Glahn and Juan José Egozcue from the 14th to the 18th of August.

Hovedinnhold

The Center for Deep Sea Research at the University of Bergen will organise a 5-day workshop on compositional data analysis (CoDA). Leading the workshop will be Vera Pawlowsky-Glahn and Juan José Egozcue, 2 eminent professors in the field of CoDA. While the workshop will mainly tackle problems inherent to the use of sequencing data in microbiology/bioinformatics, the topic is relevant for everyone working with compositional data and we welcome everyone irrespective of academic background. Some of the topics addressed will be the treatment of 0-dominated compositions (sparse datasets) and the scaling of compositions with absolute quantitative information. We also want to give ample time for students and researcher to discuss own data and the various CoDA approaches suitable for their problems.

Date and time: Monday 14th to Friday 18th of August, from 09h00 to 12h00 everyday.
Location: CDeepSea seminar room (4C12a) at Realfagbygget, Allégaten 41, 5007 Bergen.
Fee: The workshop is free.
Registration: Please fill in the registration by following this link.
Contact: For further information please contact Sven Le Moine Bauer.

Short introduction to CoDA
Compositional Data Analysis is a statistical framework designed to analyse data that represents parts of a whole
or compositions. It is commonly used in various fields such as economics, ecology, and geology. CoDA
recognises that compositional data possesses unique properties, such as the closure constraint, where the sum
of all parts is constant. By employing specialised techniques like log-ratio transformations and isometric log-ratio
coordinates, CoDA enables meaningful analysis and visualisation of compositional data.

Tentative program
Monday 14th 09:00 - 12:00: Opening session with introduction to CoDA and the problems to be addressed
in the following sessions by Vera and Juan Jo.
Tuesday 15th 09:00 -12:00: Workshop session on the problem of 0-replacements in sparse datasets, and
the scaling of compositional data to recover absolute abundances.
Wednesday 16th 09:00 - 12:00: Workshop session on the use of various approaches and data
transformations to tackle various problems in CoDA.
Thursday 17th 09:00 - 12:00: Open session to discuss specific datasets of the members.
Friday 18th 09:00 - 12:00: Summary session.
