Gabriele de Seta er teknisk sett sosiolog. Han har en doktorgrad fra Hong Kong polytekniske universitet og var postdoktor ved Institutt for etnologi ved Academia Sinica i Taipei. Gabriele er for tiden postdoktor ved det ERC-finansierte prosjektet Machine Vision in Everyday Life, og ble i 2021 tildelt prisen for unge forskere i humanistiske fag ved Det humanistiske fakultet, UiB. 

Forskningsarbeidet hans, forankret i etnografisk engasjement på tvers av flere nettsteder, fokuserer på digitale mediepraksiser, sosiotekniske forviklinger og folkelig kreativitet i den kinesisktalende verden. Han er også interessert i eksperimentell musikk, ny mediekunst og samarbeidsflater mellom forskning og kreativ praksis.

Jeg har designet "Machine Vision"-modulen for bacheloremnet Critical Approaches to Technology and Society (høsten 2020) og undervist på masteremnet Key Theories in Digital Culture (høsten 2021).

Jeg holder jevnlig gjesteforelesninger og leder workshops ved internasjonale institusjoner. Jeg er for tiden biveileder for ph.d.-kandidat Marianne Gunderson og masterstudent på digital kultur, Marie Reike.

Mine publikasjoner er listet på Google Scholar, og de fleste er tilgjengelige via lenker på min nettside.

Jeg har nylig skrevet om deepfakes på kineisiske sosiale media-plattformer, den visuelle estetikken til Kinas maskinsyndindustri og den sosiotekniske historien til QR-koden.
