Magda L. Dumitru har utviklet 'the distance index' som en biomarkør for den mannlige og kvinnelige hjerneprototypen innen psykopatologi. Hun undersøker forholdet mellom bevissthet og hjernestruktur, samt potensialet til indeksen for å avsløre det (epi)genetiske grunnlaget for kreativitet i både helse og psykiske lidelser.
"Hver dag registrerer sansene våre en imponerende mengde informasjon, som genererer skjevheter for mer effektiv prosessering. For eksempel dekoder vi språk bedre med høyre øre. Dette er kjent som "høyre ørefordel" (right ear advantage REA), og teamet vårt har funnet ut måter å øke REA og forbedre oppfatningen av raske visuelle stimuli. Vi har også vist at ved å endre ordet 'AND' med 'ELLER' klarer folk å kode flere minneepisoder i stedet for én. Hyppigere chunking og re-kombinering av informasjon er et kjennetegn på kreativitet. Teamet vårt utforsker forskjeller i hjernestruktur hos kreative individer. Vi har funnet ut at venstre og høyre hjernehalvdel er mer sammenhengende hos kvinner enn hos menn, både når det gjelder helse og psykiske lidelser. En ny forskningsretning er fremveksten av kreativitet hos pasienter med Parkinson, som plutselig får "gnisten" til å produsere kunst."
