Mitt forskningsfelt har to tematiske hovedpilarer: For det første, muslimske samfunn med lang historisk tilstedeværelse i Sørøst Europa og som del av dette, men mer generelt, etnisk identitet forankret i religion og relasjoner mellom muslimer og kristne. For det andre, samfunn og mennesker i stater der det finner sted dramatiske politiske og økonomisk omveltninger som leder til voldelig konflikt og krig, og i forlengelsen av dette, ulike normaliseringsprosesser etter endt krig; tilbakevending av internt fordrevne til sine hjem, krigsforbryterdomstoler, offentlige diskurser om rett og skyld, krigsminnesteder, og hvordan ulike mennesker uttrykker sine erfaringer og tilpasser seg nye politiske strukturer. Min etnografiske forskning har funnet sted i Bosnia-Herzegovina, først som del av den Sosialistiske Føderale Jugoslaviske Republikk (-1991), og deretter som en stat i krig der etniske ledere ønsket ulike politiske statsløsninger for "sine" befolkninger, og sivilbefolkningen var hovedmålet for politiske og militære kampanjer, og sist Bosnia-Herzegovina som en uavhengig stat med dype politiske, administrative og sosiale skillelinjer basert på etnisitet (med forankring i ulike religiøse tradisjoner) og med motstridene fortellinger om krigen.
