PhD Fellowship in Social Anthropology

A doctoral fellowship in social anthropology is available at the Department of Social Anthropology, University of Bergen, Norway.

The fellowship has been established in recognition of the distinguished contribution of Professor Fredrik Barth, the Department’s founder, to anthropological knowledge. The scholarship runs for a fixed term of 3 years, including a year of ethnographic fieldwork in a region of the successful candidate’s own choosing. Tentative starting date is early January 2024.

Applicants must have achieved a Master's degree in social or cultural anthropology by the closing date for applications. The fellowship is open to citizens of countries outside USA, Canada, Japan, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

The successful candidate must meet the formal requirements for admission to the PhD programme at the University of Bergen. A proposal for the PhD project (not exceeding five pages) must be submitted with the application.

The scholarship is gross NOK 20 000 a month. In addition, we will cover travel to and from Bergen and travel and research maintenance in the field. The candidate is expected to have their working place in Bergen, apart from the period of fieldwork. The candidate is expected to complete the PhD programme within the 3-year period of the fellowship.
