Data Science Competition at the Department of Informatics
CEDAS and NORBIS are happy to invite all bachelor, master, and PhD students at the Department of Informatics to a data science competition! The challenge is open enough so that everyone can participate at their own level, and we will elect winners in each category (bachelor, master, PhD).

What and where?
The competition starts on Friday, 3rd November, at 5pm in Aktivt Rom 2+3, and ends on Sunday, 5th of November, at midnight. The results will be announced at a later date. On Friday, at 5pm, a biology dataset and instructions will be sent to participants.
On Friday, at 5pm, a biology dataset and instructions will be sent to participants. The problem will be very open and the dataset can be explored in various ways. For example, methods in data science, machine learning, statistics, visualisation can be relevant depending on your approach. Knowledge in biology is not necessary to take part in the competition. Once familiar with the general problem at hand, participants are welcome to either work alone or in small groups of up to 3 people.
The deadline to form groups is Friday 3rd at 23:59. Throughout the event, it will be possible to ask questions to the competition organizers. The Aktivt Rom 2+3 is also booked from 7am to 10pm on Saturday and Sunday for participants who would like to work on the campus.
Reviewing submissions:
All submissions will receive individual feedback from a group of reviewers a few days after the event, focusing on aspects like programming skills, basic data science skill, visualization, machine learning, statistics and report.
In each category (bachelor, master, PhD), the best submissions will be awarded prizes ranging from movie tickets to UiB-merch, and will receive a certificate from the reviewing committee. The category of a group is defined as the highest category among its members (e.g. a group of 2 bachelor and 1 master students is in the master category). Top submissions will get the opportunity to discuss their results with the researchers who study this dataset. The reviewing committee consists of: Pekka Parviainen, Nello Blaser ,Laura Garrison, David Grellscheid, Iain Johnston and Marie Montjourides.
This competition is for you if you:
- Are interested in competitions such as Kaggle competitions, Google competitions or online programming competitions.
- Are interested in data science and/or biology.
- Are interested in working with real data, produced by researchers at UiB from an ongoing research project.
- Would like to get more experience as well as thorough and individual feedback on a real-life task.
- Would like to collaborate with other students while taking breaks at the programmerbar and eating pizza?
If you are interested, please register by filling out the the registration form (registration now closed).
For any questions related to the competition, please contact Natacha Galmiche.
The dataset is part of the RAS-TOOLS project funded by NordForsk.
