Laryngeal mask vs. bag-mask ventilation in neonatal resuscitation, Uganda

Providing effective ventilation is extremely important in successful neonatal resuscitation, but doing this with a mask requires high skills and continuous training. Observations indicate that the newest laryngeal masks are easier to use for untrained staff, thus reducing the risk of birth asphyxia.

PROMISE SB: Saving Brains in Uganda and Burkina Faso

Exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) has been associated with better cognition in some developed countries. In this project scientists from Uganda and Burkina Faso will assess whether EBF promotion enhances human capital formation including cognitive function, mental and general health.

STOPENTERICS: Vaccination against Shigella and ETEC: novel antigens, novel approaches

The objective of this project is to contribute to the development of vaccines against Shigella and ETEC for children of the developing world.

Reducing maternal and neonatal mortality in southwest Ethiopia

In Ethiopia, the maternal mortality ratio (MMR) was 720 per 100,000 live births in 2005, and about 90 times higher than in resource-rich countries. Reducing the maternal and neonatal mortality are the targets of the Millennium Development Goals 4 and 5.

The project's ultimate goal is to reduce the maternal and neonatal mortality.

This project aims to improve quality and equity in emergency obstetric and neonatal care in Addis Ababa. The ultimate goal is to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality.

This project consists of previously conducted randomized, placebo-controlled trials in India and Tanzania, where half of the participants received high doses of vitamin B12 in early life.

Ninety-eight percent of the approximately 3.3 million deaths in the first 28 days of life occur in low and middle income countries (LMICs), yearly. A third of these are associated with infections and this proportion rises in areas where at least half of the births occur at home like Uganda.

More than 3 of the 7.6 million global deaths in under 5 years occur in the neonatal period and about 75% in the first week of life. More than 70% of these neonatal deaths occur in Africa and South East Asia.
