What is a PhD?

A PhD-degree is a programme you can enroll in after you have finished your masters. As a PhD-candidate, you can do research in your field of science over a period of three to four years.

At the University of Bergen (UiB) you can choose to do your ph.d at one of our seven faculties. 

What is a PhD? 

  • A ph.d is estimated to last three years but can last longer. 

  • As a PhD student, you are employed at the university and will get paid for the research you conduct. 

  • At the end of the program, you will present your research in a scientific dissertation, a doctoral thesis. 

  • During the program, you will also contribute to the academic environment, often as a lecturer in relevant bachelor’s and master's degree programs. 

Which PhD programme can I apply for? 

To qualify for a PhD program, you usually need to have completed a master's degree. In your application to the program, you must also include a project proposal.

How is it being a PhD student? 

As a Ph.D. candidate, you are part of an active academic community. You will have the opportunity to collaborate with some of the world's leading researchers in your field, who will also be involved in guiding you. Watch the video of former Ph.D. student Marion Claireaux here:

After a PhD 

After completing a PhD degree, you will be well-positioned in the job market. You can continue your career within academia, for example as a university lecturer, postdoctoral researcher, or professor. A PhD degree will also make you more attractive in both the private and public sectors.
