WATCH: The Turbulent Concept of Social Acceptance in Emerging Energy Technologies (and why many social scientists hate it)

Abstract

In the realm of European research, various theories, concepts, and methods are currently used to address social sustainability and social impact in energy technology projects. Concepts such as social acceptance, social readiness, social embeddedness, impact readiness, and balanced readiness are some of these concepts that in turn have been developed into assessment tools on social sustainability and readiness, serving more or less as twin concepts to the well-known technology readiness level (TRL), used to estimate the maturity of technologies.

The most well-known of these concepts is undoubtedly social acceptance, which is commonly requested and required in large project proposals, including EU projects. In today's lunch seminar, I will begin by explaining the various shortcomings of this concept from a social scientist's perspective. Following this, I will propose how social acceptance “should” be conceptualized in the context of energy technology projects.

Marie Louise Ljones [source: norceresearch.no] har mastergrad i statsvitenskap fra Universitetet i Bergen (2021) innenfor disiplinen administrasjon og organisasjonsvitenskap fra Institutt for politikk og forvaltning. I tillegg har hun mastergrad i naturvitenskap fra Universitetet i Bergen (2008) innenfor disiplinen medisinsk cellebiologi (biokjemi). Marie har flere års arbeidserfaring fra studie- og prosjektadministrasjon, både fra Universitet i Bergen og fra Uni Research/NORCE Norwegian Research Centre. I dag jobber hun som samfunnsforsker i forskningsgruppen Klima, Miljø og Bærekraft hvor tverrfaglige problemstillinger står i fokus.

For tiden er Marie involvert i flere internasjonale samarbeidsprosjekt som ser på offentlig og sosial aksept i forbindelse med teknologier og metoder som kan bidra til det grønne skiftet, spesielt innenfor energifeltet. Her inngår Stakeholder engagement, Social acceptance og relaterte begrep som en viktig del av arbeidet. Metoder som blir brukt er gjerne intervju, fokusgrupper, workshops og deliberative arrangement.
