Who can apply

Students at the Master's Programme in Biomedical Sciences (administered by the Department of Biomedicine).

When can I go

You may go on exchange during the 2nd, 3rd and 4th semester, but you have to be back at UiB in time for your final Master's exam.

What courses can I take

You may take 30 ECTSs of elective courses in the 2nd semester, but these courses must be incorporated into your study plan and chosen in cooperation with your supervisor at the Master's programme. Please contact the Section of Academic Affairs at the Department of Biomedicine for details around choosing courses during an exchange. You may also do a lab project and get this approved as an elective course.

It is also possible for you to do your Master's thesis (completely or partially) with a research group at this institution, in which case you also need to have a co-supervisor at the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry.Such stays must be planned in detail and approved by the Programme Committee in Biomedical Sciences as well as the research millieus in question at the respective institutions.

About the institution and the city

University of Eastern Finland blei til gjennom ei samanslåing av to tidlegre uavhengige universitet i 2010, og er no eit breiddeuniversitet med 15 000 studentar og fire fakultet. Blant fokusområda er skogforsking, miljø, helse og utvikling av ny teknologi. Universitetet er fordelt over to hovudcampusar i byane Joensuu og Kuopio aust i Finland, samt ein mindre campus i Savonlinna.

I Joensuu ligg European Forest Institute og fleire eksportbedrifter. Byen er regionhovudstad, og var på slutten av 1800-talet ein av dei største hamnebyane i Finland. Kuopio er den åttande største byen i Finland, og er rekna som Aust-Finlands kulturelle sentrum. Han er omgitt av ein innsjø, og delar av byen er bygd på øyer. Byen har eit unikt gatenettverk, kor annakvar gate er ein fotgjengar- og sykkelveg.

Accommodation

Universitetet har ikkje eigne bustader, men samarbeider med uavhengige organisasjonar som driv med formidling av studentbustader både i Joensuu, Kuopio og Savonlinna. Søknad om bustad kan sendast så snart ein har fått opptak ved universitetet. Det er òg mogleg å finne rimeleg prisa bustad privat i desse byane.
