Why geography?
I was interested in studying societal issues from multidisciplinary perspective, and for me it meant learning about how different things that happen in societies are related to each other and what might be the roots for it.
With this basis, I think we could understand more how we can develop different systems to be more sustainable. I was also interested in studying the role of nature and how people relate to it.
The best memories from studying geography in Bergen?
Living together with two other geography students and going for study breaks to dip in the fjord throughout the year!
What did you study in your master's project?
I had a focus on social and economic geography, and in my master project I studied sustainability reporting practices and motivation of companies with cases both from Norway and Finland. I found it interesting to look into the practice of disclosing environmental and social information about economic activities to see what is communicated as sustainable, why such practice has become more important and what it tells about change of values and requirements for economic activities.
What is your current occupation?
I work currently in a project of climate and energy strategy for the region of Lapland in Finland. It is my home region, so I'm happy to work in a project that focuses on sustainable development at the local level but now I'm also seeing the challenge of it! Together with the project team we are working on climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies for the region.
The job is largely about collaborating with different actors and stakeholders at different levels from the municipalities to form guidelines for the future to meet the climate goals.
How are the geography studies of relevance for your work?
During the studies, I learnt how to look at societal issues with a broad perspective and take into account different actors and ways of doing. I think it helps to understand the different levels and roles that are part of regional development. In this process, I think it also helps to understand structures and possibly point out some possibilities to make an impact.
What is your advice to new geography students?
Be curious of your surroundings and think how some of the concepts you learn play out in the everyday life. And gather some study groups to help to share and reflect :)
