The first annual March / Olsen Honorary Lecture had Professor of Sociology, Emeritus at Stanford University, William Richard Scott as its speaker. He held a lecture titled "Institutions Matter: Now more than Ever" which focused on March and Olsen’s institutional framework to consider the current challenges confronting democratic governance.

This lecture series pays tribute to the great scholarly contributions by James G. March and Johan P. Olsen within the fields of organizational and institutional theory. It is hosted and arranged by the Department of Administration and Organization Theory, at the University of Bergen, Norway.

William Richard Scott is one of the most distinguished scholars within organizational sociology and institutional theory. He is the author of numerous books, among them «Organizations and Organizing: Rational, Natural and Open System Perspectives» (2006) and «Institutions and Organizations» (2001).

The recording of the lecture in its entirety is available here: March / Olsen Honorary Lecture, 2018 - William Richard Scott. The lecture is introduced by a video message from James G. March, who unfortunately was not able to join in person, as well as introductory comments by Johan P. Olsen regarding the development of the field. The latter has recently published an article which focuses on the Bergen School’s distinctive academic approach here: «The Bergen approach to public administration and political organization».

The lecture was held at the 23rd of May, 2018, in the University Aula at the University of Bergen.
