Nordic citizens

Requirements to live and work in Norway for citizens from the Nordic countries.

Main content

Danish, Finnish, Icelandic, or Swedish citizens may stay and work in Norway indefinitely without a permit. However, you will still need to report a move to Norway and order a tax card when you arrive.

You need to book an appointment at the Service Centre for Foreign Workers (SUA) to register with the Tax administration to:

  • Apply for a tax deduction card
  • ID control/verification and reporting a move to Norway (if you are planning to live in Norway for more than six months)

When booking your appointment at SUA/Tax Administration, you may choose the option "I'm going to work in Norway more than 6 months and must report a move to Norway AND apply for a tax deduction card for the first time". This appointment should be booked as soon as possible after your arrival in Norway. Without a tax deduction card, you will be deducted 50% taxes from your salary.

When you have received your Norwegian ID number, you must send the ID number to the payroll office at post@lonnskontoret.uib.no so they can register you correctly and correct your tax deduction rate. You may also open a Norwegian bank account.

If you are planning to commute between Norway and another nordic country, this may affect your registration of moving to Norway.
