Salary is maintained from a foreign employer and the stay in Norway is less than one year

You will not be a part of the Norwegian social security scheme, we advise you to have a valid travelers insurance for the duration of your stay.

Nationals from the European Economic Area (EEA) must be issued with a S1 from their home country to receive health care if the say is longer than 3 months. If the stay is less than three months, you must bring your european health insurance card.

U.S. citizens must have their social security authorities issue the form USA/N-101.

For citizens of other countries, it should be clarified whether the home country's social security arrangement applies to Norway. If that is the case, the international researcher must bring a confirmation upon the arrival that he/she is still a member of the home country's social security arrangement when working in Norway.

  • The employee will usually have to pay the employers' contribution to the Norwegian National Insurance. Contact the local social security office to find out what this will amount to.

Receiving salary from UiB and a foreign employer, or short term contract with UiB

If your work is in two or more countries, or you are in Norway for a short contract, and you are an EU/EEA citizen, you must bring with you an A1 form to document which social security system you belong to. This A1 form or Certificate of Coverage (for noen EU/EEA citizens) must be forwarded to the administration at your UiB institute/unit who in turn will notify the salary office at UiB. This form is to be send to NAV with your Norwegian ID number attached to it.

If you do not have any documentation of membership in another social security scheme you will pay contribution to the Norwegian social security scheme through your tax.

You normally don't receive a documentation on your membership in the Norwegian National Insurance Scheme. If you fulfill the requirements you are a member when you are in Norway.
