The main part of my research concerns children in preschool age with different degrees of hearing loss, and their psychosocial development. Having a hearing loss affects a child’s access to social interaction, their language development and psychosocial adjustment. Identifying the mechanisms behind the different developmental outcomes is important in order to provide well-targeted interventions in family, daycare and school, promoting psychosocial adjustment and language development.
One of the developmental areas of my particular interest is emotion understanding; that is, recognition and understanding of one’s own and others’ emotional reactions. Identifying factors associated with individual differences in emotion understanding increases our understanding of children’s overall development. I am also interested in social skills in general, which includes a wide range of abilities and the use of different skills in different contexts.
I have used both cross-sectional and longitudinal study designs in my research. In particular, I am a part of the Trondheim Early Secure Study, which is a cohort study that started in 2008 collecting data from four-year olds, and is still ongoing.
I am also interested in therapist training, in particular whether and how psychology students develop their personal skills, such as mentalization, during their therapist training at the university.
