Research interests: I am Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Oslo, and I work in the Cognitive and Clinical Neuroscience (CCN) section in the department.

My first major research interest is on the topic of the human voice, on voice communication, especially on nonverbal communication. I am editor of the Oxford Handbook of Voice Perception (co-edited with Pascal Belin, Oxford University Press, 2019). Humans express and recognize a variety of social information, and we investigate how the brain enables humans to express and to recognize such information. A related research interest is in human emotions, and especially about the neural processes underlying the experience but also the communication of emotions. My investigations involve healthy humans but also dysfunctional emotional and communicative processes and specific neurological patients.

My second major research interest concerns certain brain systems. Since I mainly do neuroscientific research in the field of auditory and affective neuroscience, the human auditory and limbic systems are central to many of my investigations. We investigate the auditory and limbic system both from a functional brain activations point of view but also from a structural neuroanatomical point of view. My third major research interest is in the field of Forensic Psychology, and we do investigations in the field of eyewitness memory for encountered crimes, as well as on the neurobiological brain basis for neural markers of psychopathic traits and risk factors to commit violent crimes.
