Deadly heat in Europe – findings from the CICERO led research project EXHAUSTION

As global temperatures reach record highs, awareness of the health impacts of climate change is increasing. In the recently finalized EU-funded project EXHAUSTION (Exposure to heat and air pollution in Europe – cardiopulmonary impacts and benefits of mitigation and adaptation), we examined the relationship between ambient heat and health outcomes across Europe, assessing current health burdens and projecting them under various climate change scenarios. Our focus included understanding differential vulnerabilities to extreme temperatures across the continent and identifying factors that may increase or decrease this vulnerability, such as air pollution and urban green spaces. We emphasize that evidence on vulnerability factors is crucial for developing targeted adaptation strategies.
