Leave of absence and break at The Faculty of Psychology

If you want leave of absence or a break from your studies, you must send an application. Here you will find the application form and procedure.

We distinguish between a leave of absence and a break from studies

Are you planning a break in your studies, or do you need to apply for leave? As a student, you have a duty to inform us of any absences, so that we can adjust your education plan accordingly. Some of the study programs have their own rules and guidelines for breaks and leave. Please review what applies to you and your study program below.

If possible, we would like you to apply for leave ahead of the leave period, by 1st of August for the autumn semester and 1st of January for the spring semester.

1. Application deadline
If possible, we would like you to apply for leave ahead of the leave period, by 1st of August for the autumn semester and 1st of January for the spring semester. Exceptions are unforeseen situations such as acute illness, or the like.

2. Duration
You can apply for leave for a minimum of one semester and a maximum of two semesters at a time. You can normally only have a total of one year's leave from your studies. The exception is leave in the event of illness or childbirth.

3. Basis for leave
You can apply for leave in accordance with the reasons stated in UiB's study regulations in section 5-2, first paragraph. New students will not be granted leave or postponed start of studies on the basis of paid or unpaid work at the start of their studies. In such cases, you will be encouraged to apply for new admission on a later occasion.

5. Semester fee
Students on leave can choose whether they want to pay the semester fee. Students registered for exams must pay semester fees even if they are on leave.

Bachelor students

Students at the professional studies in psychology

1. Deadline
You must apply for a break by 1st of September for the autumn semester and 1st of February in the spring semester. Use the application form that you can find on this page.

2. Duration
If you are a student on a bachelor's programme, you can have up to a one-year break from the study program without giving any reason.

Professional students can apply for a break of up to two semesters before starting preclinical practice and two semesters after finishing preclinical practice.

You can have a maximum of two semester breaks. If you need more, you must send the faculty a reasoned application for leave.

3. Conditions for break
You must have passed 60 credits in the education plan before you can be granted a break from your studies.

4. Right to study during a break
During a break, your right to study on the program is suspended and you cannot participate in classes or take exams. You do not have to pay semester fee.

Regulations

The rules for leave are laid down in UiB's study regulations § 5-2 and in the Supplementary regulations in educational matters for the Faculty of Psychology § 5-2 and the Universities and Colleges Act § 4-3 letters d and e.
