Natalya Gallo

Natalya Gallo is a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Bergen and is an affiliate of the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research. She is a marine ecologist and biological oceanographer and studies how climate change affects marine ecosystems. Prior to arriving in Bergen, she worked at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego where she received her M.S. (2014) and Ph.D. (2018) degrees. Her Ph.D. examined how ocean deoxygenation affects the community ecology of seafloor-associated fishes and fisheries species. For this work, she received the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship, the Switzer Environmental Leadership Fellowship, and was an honoree on the Forbes 30 under 30 science list. Afterwards, she worked as a quantitative fisheries and ecology postdoc with the CalCOFI ecosystem monitoring program at Scripps and the NOAA Southwest Fisheries Science Center. She is passionate about the role scientists can play in informing ocean-climate policies and has participated in seven United Nations international meetings on climate and ocean matters. She shares knowledge on the ocean-climate policy landscape through teaching and publishing and is a member of the Early Career Ocean Professionals group of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. Her dream is to lead an interdisciplinary research group that develops innovative scientific solutions to critical marine ecosystem management challenges through active engagement between academics, industry stakeholders, and policy makers.
