60 years of Sudan-Bergen cooperation

2023 marks the 60 year anniversary for academic collaboration between Bergen and Sudan. This page presents both cooperation in the past and the new Sudan-Norway Academic Cooperation programme.

Throughout 2023, the University of Khartoum (UofK), the Chr. Michelsen Institute (CMI), and the University of Bergen marked 60 years of academic collaboration between Bergen and Sudan. Because of the ongoing war in Sudan, we focused on the current situation by arranging events, exhibitions, and activities in Bergen.

The Royal Norwegian Embassy in Sudan has funded the Sudan-Norway Academic Cooperation (SNAC) programme. An amount of NOK 40 million is awarded to new academic projects between Bergen and Sudan, to be distributed between now and the end of 2027.

UiB follows the developments in Sudan and we are deeply worried about the current situation for the Sudanese people, our colleagues and partners in this acute and terrible crisis. We want to express our solidarity with Sudanese friends and colleagues, hoping to soon be able to continue our cooperation in a peaceful and democratic Sudan.

Events

18th-20th of October 2023 we marked 60 years of cooperation with a three-day symposium at the University of Bergen.

The event was streamed, and we have posted all the recordings from the panels.

Celebrating 60 years of cooperation between Bergen and Sudan

On Wednesday, 8 March, the University of Bergen (UiB) organized an anniversary celebration of the academic collaboration between Bergen and Sudan. The celebration was held at the Department of Social Anthropology where the collaboration started 60 years ago.

Saving Sudan’s history

The University of Bergen is making an untapped source of historical material available by digitising the vast TV archives of Sudan National Broadcasting Corporation.

New additions to Sudan collection

The University Library adds unique documents to an already significant collection as Professor Rex Seán O'Fahey bequeaths his large private archive.
