Main content

Shuntaro Yamada, DDS., MSc., PhD, is a postdoctoral fellow at the Center of Translational Oral Research, Department of Clinical Dentistry, Faculty of Medicine, UiB. The area of his expertise includes Regenerative Dentistry, Tissue Engineering, and Craniofacial and Stem Cell Biology. Shuntaro is currently exploring the application of neural crest-originated dental stem cells to engineer neovascularized bone implants, a cutting-edge solution for patients undergoing mandibulectomy. This multidisciplinary project integrates biomaterial research, cell biology, high-throughput analysis, bioinformatics, and advanced biofabrication technologies. Additionally, he was awarded the UiB ide innovation grant in 2023 for his development of an innovative cell culture platform, which is set to facilitate the future clinical translation of the cell-laden implants for bone regeneration.

Apart from his research projects, Shuntaro has been recognized for his excellence in scientific dissemination at various levels. In particular, he focuses on reaching the general public through scientific artwork on different media, some of which were recently featured by Nature. Additionally, he has been developing pedagogical insights for education (PGCert in Academic Practice, FHEA), aiming to enhance scholarly learning and teaching in modern dentistry. His initiative to advance dental education has been recently funded by Skipsreder Jacob R. Olsen og hustru Johanne Georgine Olsens legat and UNIFOR - Stiftelsen til tannlegevitenskapens fremme.
