Main content

Maren Metell is a postdoctoral fellow in music therapy at the Grieg Academy, Faculty for Fine Arts, Music and Design. Her current research explores how interdisciplinary and participatory approaches expands our understanding of the role that music and aesthetic experience play in medical contexts from premature birth to the end of life.

Maren received her PhD from Goldsmiths, University of London in 2023. In her PhD research she has, together with disabled children and their families, explored what makes music accessible and meaningful, considering the material, embodied and sensory aspects of musical interaction.

She has previously worked as a music therapist and adviser with children and their families and in pedagogical settings, as a lecturer in the music therapy program at Grieg Academy, as researcher at NORCE and in the editorial teams of the Nordic Journal of Music Therapy and Voices: A World Forum for Music Therapy.

Her research interests include dimensions of power in music therapy, children’s access to music and participatory and arts-based approaches, especially the use of drawings, to analyse, represent and communicate what happens in music therapy.
