LAUNCH OF NEW RESEARCH PROJECTS

Small fish and nutrition: official launch of two projects

The two projects SmallFish4Food and SmallFishClim led by the University of Bergen are officially launched in this event. The two new projects build on previous research on small fish for food and nutrition. The event is free and open to all.

Professor Jeppe Kolding from the Department of Biological Sciences and Professor Ragnhild Overå from the Department of Geography previously headed the SmallFishFood project, which was funded by the mutual African-European innovation initiative LEAP AGRI with the Norwegian share funded via the Research Council of Norway. A major partner in the project was the Institute of Marine Research with researcher Marian Kjellevold as a key contributor to both this project and other collaborations with the UiB researchers. The project ended in 2023. Along with the other international partners in SmallFishFood the project resulted in a publication for the United Nations (UN) Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) entitled “Small fish for food security and nutrition”.

Immediately afterwards Kolding, Overå and Kjellevold applied for continued funding through an SDG Pilots Call for the new “Small fish for food and nutrition security in Africa” project, or SmallFish4Food in short. The SDG Pilots Call is an initiative from the Global Research Council, an international network of national funding bodies including the Research Council of Norway. In the acceptance letter SmallFish4Food is described as “very relevant” and “excellently conceptualized”. In addition to this Kolding and Overå have been awarded funding for yet another project funded by the Research Council of Norway. SmallFishClim also builds on the SmallFishFood project but with a particular emphasis on climate change. Overå presented this project in June at the House of Literature in Oslo in a seminar organised by the Research Council of Norway, who fund the project via the New Frontiers Research Fund 2023 International Joint Initiative for Research in Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation.

The official launch of the two new projects will take place Thursday 5 September 11:30-12:30 at NG5 (Nygårdsgaten 5), in the meeting room called Sydneshaugen.
