Strong UiB Presence in NORHED Applications
The University of Bergen is a project partner in more than a quarter of the applications sent to Norad.

In December 2012, 25 UiB projects were granted seed funding from Norad. At the deadline for the main call on 15th March, Norad had received 160 applications, 39 of which included the University of Bergen as a partner institution. This number represents a continuation of the university’s historical commitment to global and development-related issues.
Geographical and academic diversity
The NORHED programme represents an opportunity for UiB to build on long-standing relations, and to build new partnerships.
The 39 projects comprise partnerships with institutions in a number of countries, among them Colombia, Ethiopia, Tanzania, DR Congo, Sudan, Malawi, Uganda, Burkina Faso, South Africa, Nepal, Palestine, Bangladesh and South Sudan.
All six sub-programmes developed by Norad are represented by the UiB projects: Education and training; Health; Natural Resource Management, Climate Change and Environment; Economic and Democratic Governance; Humanities, Culture, Media and Communication; and Capacity Building in South Sudan. The projects involve a wide range of disciplines at four different faculties, in addition to the University Museum and the University Library.
The results of the applications will be announced between 15th of June and 1st of July.
A new programme
The Norwegian Programme for Capacity Building in Higher Education and Research for Development (NORHED) was launched by Norad in 2012, and the first round of project funding will start in October 2013.
The aim of the programme is to strengthen higher education and research capacities in low and middle income countries (LMIC), with the ultimate goal of sustainable economic, social and environmental development.
Each project will constitute a partnership between a Norwegian institution of higher education and an institution in a specific country of implementation.
The annual NORHED budget is estimated to be 150 million NOK, covering a portfolio of 40 to 50 projects lasting five years. Each project will have a total budget of 7 to 18 million NOK.
Norad has developed criteria for countries and institutions to be eligible for project applications: “Partners from [low and middle income countries] must be higher education institutions (HEI) accredited/recognised by in-country national authorities in countries registered as OECD DAC official development assistance recipients, or as listed in the specific call for applications”. However other countries can also be considered, if they are part of a network.
