Life-GAP project results at ERS Congress 2024
PhD students Shanshan Xu and Robin Mzati Sinsamala, from the Life-GAP project presented their research at the European Respiratory Society (ERS) Congress in Vienna, Austria, in September 2024.

Shanshan Xu found that long-term exposure to air pollution was associated with increased risk of respiratory emergency room visits and hospitalizations. Conversely, exposure to greenness showed protective associations against respiratory hospitalizations, yet it posed adverse effects on emergency room visits among individuals with atopic conditions. These findings emphasize the critical impact of long-term exposure to air pollution on respiratory health and the complex relationship between greenness and respiratory health. The study garnered considerable media attention, was highlighted by the ERS media team, and received extensive coverage across various news outlets, such as The Telegraph, News Medical, and Healio, underscoring its importance and relevance in the field.
Robin Mzati Sinsamala investigated whether pre-conception parental residential exposure to air pollution and greenness in adulthood is associated with asthma outcomes in future offspring. He presented that parental residential greenness exposure was consistently associated with lower asthma risk in the offspring and the associations remained consistent after adjusting for air pollution exposure.
