A great earthquake of magnitude 8.8 (MW) occurred today February 27, 2010 at 06:34 (UTC) in Southern Chile. This earthquake filled the seismic-gap between the March 3, 1985 Valparaiso earthquake (MW =7.9) in the north and the great 1960 earthquake (MW =9.5) in the south (see the black ellipse in the figure below). The earthquake rupture most likely took place along the 350-400 km long segment. Within this zone, the Talca earthquake of January 12, 1928 (MW =8.0) is the most significant event.
