In the last couple of years, the number of so-called "climate lawsuits" has increased considerably around the world. Especially in the last year, the frequency and attention around it seems to have skyrocketed! More and more people are now going to court to claim violations of fundamental human rights to prevent climate change and speed up the green shift.
With new lawsuits in the Netherlands, Germany, and Belgium, among others, as well as unresolved cases from the ECHR, as a backdrop, we at Enviro want to give a closer insight into a legal area in rapid development! To help us understand this exciting legal development, we have the best Norwegian knowledge in the field, including Jenny Sandvig!
With us at the event are:
Helge Drange, Bjerknes Center for Climate Research: To start the event, we have been so lucky to have with us one of Norway's best and brightest climate researchers. Over the years, Helge has contributed to important research in the field, especially in climate modeling, and been a key contributor to the Climate Panel, and their reports!
Jenny Sandvig, Director of NIM (Norway's institution for human rights): Over the past year, Jenny has established herself as Norway's most prominent in the field of 'climate and human rights'! In addition to being the main author behind NIM's report "Climate and human rights", Jenny has also given important input to both the Supreme Court and the ECHR, and must be said to be the one in Norway who follows this legal development most closely!
Catalina Vallejo, postdoc. at the Faculty of Law in Bergen: Catalina has researched climate and human rights for several years and is UiB's foremost expert in the field. Among other things, she has written her doctoral dissertation on climate lawsuits against states, and carried out research work on global aspects of climate lawsuits. Through this work, Catalina has a unique knowledge on the topic!
Food will be served during the event. See you in Auditorium 1!
