Join the NORA Summer Research School!
During the NORA Summer Research School, the Centre for the Science of Learning and Technology (SLATE) is offering a course for PhD candidates and practitioners working with machine learning, data science, AI, or generative AI.

Main content
This June, NORA Summer Research School will offer four intensive courses on current topics within the field of Artificial Intelligence, each course yielding 5 ECTS from UiB. One of the courses, Generative AI for Synthetic Data: Applications in Machine Learning, is organised and led by the Centre for the Science of Learning and Technology (SLATE), UiB.
The course offers an introduction to creating artificial data (or so-called synthetic data) for machine learning, AI, and data-driven applications. Building and testing machine learning models often require large, diverse, and high-quality datasets, but privacy concerns, data quality, and data scarcity frequently pose challenges.
Designed for PhD candidates and practitioners working with machine learning, data science, AI, or generative AI, the course will provide foundational knowledge and practical tools for synthetic data generation. Participants will gain theoretical insights and hands-on experience with advanced methods, including GANs and large language models (LLMs), to generate synthetic data tailored to their applications.
The course is designed with the aim of being approachable for beginners but also foundational for intermediate learners who wish to advance in this key and future area. Learners from multidisciplinary backgrounds are encouraged to join and expand their understanding of synthetic data to unlock new possibilities for data-driven applications.
The course is led by Mohammad Khalil, long-time Senior Researcher and newly appointed Associate Professor at SLATE. The team assisting with organising the course are SLATE PhD Candidates Qinyi Liu and Farhad Vadiee, and SLATE Researcher Ronas Shakya.

Please note:
- Spots are limited, and there is no specific registration deadline. Registration will remain open until all 20 available spots for each course have been filled. Be sure to register here as early as possible.
- Participants can only enroll in one of the four courses.
- To support travel to Fredrikstad from other Norwegian cities, travel stipends are available for students at NORA’s partner institutions.
