Our goals

The prime objective of SFI Smart Ocean is to create a flexible, robust, energy efficient, and cost effective smart sensor network platform, for marine measurements and data handling.

The ocean industries have the potential to double the contribution to the global economy by 2030 (ref OECD). At the same time the health of world oceans is at stake, locally and on a global scale. The oceans give mankind access to food and energy, and act as a giant climate regulator. There is therefore an urgent need for improved monitoring, understanding and fact-based management of the underwater environment, resources and operations.

Systematic collection of high-quality data is key to achieve well informed decisions. Digitalisation and autonomy has come a long way in many industries, and the marine industries are also expected to benefit greatly from IoT technology, as autonomous operations and remote monitoring significantly reduces operational cost and risk. However, important building blocks are missing to fully exploit this potential. The SFI Smart Ocean initiative will realise digitalisation for the marine industries, research and management.

The platform will enable automated real-time monitoring, including secure wireless communications, data storage, and high-quality time series acquisition from a diversity of sensors. In addition to sensor and system innovations, SFI Smart Ocean will develop local sensor intelligence, advanced materials, and underwater communication systems. The aim is to contribute to realize the vision of “Internet of Underwater Things” and enable robust data acquisition in marine environments and systems to ensure data quality. By using the Smart Ocean platform, the industry can secure high-quality data thus enabling fact-based decision making.

Key components from the Smart Ocean initiative includes optimised measurement strategies, data quality evaluations, novel measurement technologies, smart sensors, wireless underwater communication and smart sensor networks.

The key components will have a wide range of application areas, but will be demonstrated on:

1. Condition monitoring for e.g. O&G, offshore wind, aquaculture

2. Environmental monitoring for e.g. climate studies, O&G, aquaculture

Details regarding the demonstrators will be agreed in cooperation with industry participants.

SFI Smart Ocean is still open to new industry participants.
